Intel has announced a strategic partnership with MediaTek that will see the two tech giants produce chips for "a number of smart devices" using Intel Foundry Services (IFS). The goal of the partnership is to help MediaTek create a "more balanced and flexible supply chain" in the US and Europe

MediaTek will become a fabless chip (chip design) manufacturer, supplying the conversions used in smartphones made by Samsung, OnePlus and other brands, and powering it further will be supplied by TSMC. However, in its new partnership with MediaTek, Intel reportedly wants to have chips for the company that will be used in things like other industrial computing, medical devices, and IoT applications

Intel launched its IFS, or foundry services unit, in 2021 to take full advantage of the increased demand for semiconductor technology manufacturing by leveraging its advanced technologies and manufacturing capacity in the US and Europe. However, as one of the leading fabless chip manufacturers, MediaTek will be a key customer for Intel

Last year, Intel announced it would make chips for Qualcomm as part of its plans to set up its own foundry. The company also unveiled its "IDM 2.0" strategy, though it plans to catch up to rivals TSMC and Samsung by 2025 with a $20 billion investment in its two Arizona manufacturing plants

Meanwhile, the US Senate is set to vote on the CHIPS Act, designed to boost the country's domestic semiconductor manufacturing through up to $52 billion in tax credits and grants. Some in the semiconductor industry are concerned that this rule will benefit Intel and harm smaller manufacturers such as Nvidia, AMD and Qualcomm. These companies design their chips but don't manufacture them, so they won't benefit directly from the subsidies
